I decided to train some skills to allow me to work with scan probes recently. I then spent about 3 weeks learning how to use them by tracking down mission runners in my Buzzard Covet Ops ship. I tried both Recon and Scan launchers/probes, with the Recon's coming out on top simply for the speed of there scan. I would warp to spot containing either drones or Battleships while cloaked. Sometimes it would just be a couple of drones, which when they are 5 Ogre II's is not so bad. Other times I would find a gate or enter during someones battle with mission rats. I then just sit there and wait for my chance to loot the wrecks.
If there is another gate then it's easier as the mission runner will warp through that once he has dispatched his enemies, leaving his wrecks till later once the mission has finished. I then run around looting them for all the best kit. I have a destroyer on had with a bigger cargo space and tooled up with salvagers that I will go back and get if there are a lot of wrecks lying around. It has been rather profitable so far with about 25 million in ill gotten gains.
For a change this evening I went out with a Rifter and did a sweep of some local low-sec systems. I managed to run down a Kestrel ratting in a 'roid belt and took him out rather quickly while he only managed to get halfway into my shields. After he handed over a million isk I let his pod go. I was rather disappointed as I expected more of a fight. When I checked out the kill mail I found out why. Although he had good missile launchers with faction ammo, the only other bit of kit on the ship was a civilian shield booster?? I checked out his Bio and found he was fairly new to the game so I sent him a few bits of advice about wandering around in low-sec unprepared. He thanked me for that. I never returned his money though. The best learned lessons are the ones that are learned the hardest way!
